This little turtle sits on the dashboard of my friend Kara’s car. He bobs his head side-to-side, up and down as we drive around. He reminds me of all the little painted creatures (mostly turtles and frogs) my mom and I used to collect. We had a line of them around the kitchen sink in our house in Amherst. My mom also had a little painted bug in a wooden box that wriggled its legs when you opened the box. My mom liked to give the box to unsuspecting people and wait for the bug to startle them. Even though I knew what was inside, I always jumped a little bit whenever I opened the box!

I still keep a collection of little figures like this one around my kitchen sink (like my mom did) and on my dresser. This turtle also plays a very important role in the documentary I did about my Mom-Minders series.
I completed this photo project from May 2009 to May 2010. Six years later, I'm reposting the series with additional thoughts. Here's what I wrote about it when I started.
