For a while my mom took a women’s “bone builder” class in VT. They used hand weights and did a variety of exercises for balance, strength, and flexibility. My mom was by far one of the youngest women in the class, but it helped her improve her sense of balance, which had been severely compromised by an inner ear virus. She had a little tote bag with some light hand and ankle weights that she took to every class. Whenever I was home, I drove her to class and one time I even taped it for her so that she would have a record of all the exercises.

I don't use hand weights as much as I used to, but when I do I now use 10 pounds. I guess strength training pays off!
I completed this photo project from May 2009 to May 2010. Six years later, I'm reposting the series with additional thoughts. Here's what I wrote about it when I started.
