I found this Mallard pair jaunting around the lily ponds at The Huntington Gardens. They reminded me of all the little jaunts my mom and I would go on together. We’d tootle around town, maybe get some coffee or do a little shopping, but mostly just hang out together. Finding a mommy and baby duck pair “just hanging out” seems especially fitting because my mom always liked the ducks that would hang around our pond in VT and one of her favorite children’s books was Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey.

I think what I miss most about hanging out with my mom is how relaxed and slow paced it was. Our outings were always less about getting something specific accomplished and more about taking our time and enjoying ourselves. These days I sometimes find it hard to slow down and just enjoy being out and about.
I completed this photo project from May 2009 to May 2010. Six years later, I'm reposting the series with additional thoughts. Here's what I wrote about it when I started.
