My mom had this saying, “When you’re sick, you’re sick.” It sounds very Yogi Berra of her, I know, but it’s actually really good advice. When you’re sick, your body needs to focus on making you well again and the best way you can support that effort is to just “be sick” - i.e. rest. This past week our entire family has been down with the cold/flu-pocalypse of 2018 (seriously, everyone on my Facebook feed has this thing!). It started with our toddler (they’re always patient zero, am I right?!) who woke up on New Year’s Day, ate breakfast, and then demanded to go back to bed. Turns out he had a fever and instead of saying, “you know, it’s New Year’s Day and I have so much playing to do!” or “Man, I just have so many emails to catch up on!” or “These Christmas decorations aren’t going to put THEMSELVES away!” he grabbed his sleep sack, pointed at his crib and then slept for most of the day. The next day his fever was gone. MAGIC!
Now, I realize that you’re not a toddler and you probably don’t have the luxury of just sleeping the day away when you’re sick, but it is important that you find at least some ways to let yourself “be sick” so that your body can make you well again. Can you clear your schedule of all but your most imperative tasks? Can you go to bed early instead of staying up to watch one more episode of Stranger Things? Can you answer emails in your PJs while sipping tea? Of course, there are going to be things that you’ll just have to power through, but BE SELECTIVE! And remember, your co-workers may “really need” you to come in, but they also probably don’t want to catch your germs, so it’s actually more socially responsible of you to stay home. Try to find a balance, because “being sick” is the main thing your body is working on and the more you’re able to help it by resting and staying hydrated, the faster you’ll recover and be back to kicking butt.
I am very grateful to say that because I went to bed super early a couple nights in a row, I’m feeling much better now. And getting sick gave me an interesting topic for the SchloerBLOG this week, so it’s a win-win! Stay healthy, everyone!
Thanks for reading The SchloerBLOG, guys! Leave me a comment, won't you?
But, um, not the evil, troll-y kind, please? 😊
